Well, yes, it's true. My birthday is in October. On the eighteenth, to be specific, but you know what, guys? I think I did pretty well to wait until now to post this, rather than when it was actually drafted. We can all still be friends and you will never know that I'm actually a self-absorbed ass-hat who posts her birthday wishlist 6 months before her birthday month.

Things my Boyfriend Unknowingly Signed Up For Because I'm a Blogger.

This is basically a thank you/I'm sorry post dedicated to my Jesse (hi), who had no idea that I was a blogger when he decided that he wanted to make an honest woman out of this wild beast. In hindsight, I should have alluded to the fact that he would basically become my personal assistant rather than letting him unknowingly stumble in to the role of "blogger boyfriend" but hey! I believe there is a term that goes: Keep them on their toes?

Thank you, Jesse, for:
  • Standing out in the wind/heat/rain/apocalypse for hours on end to get 4-5 decent photos for a fashion post.
  • Ignoring the strange looks from passers-by when standing out in the wind/heat/rain/apocalypse for hours on end to get 4-5 decent photos for said fashion post.
  • Letting me use your Wi-Fi to finish a post when mine's down.
  • Constantly asking me how my blog is going.
  • Taking me to places I want to go to based on their "instagramability".
  • Listening to me ramble on about a beauty product that you couldn't care less about that I'm in the process of reviewing.
  • Waiting to eat your food even though you're starving so I can get a pretty picture of it.
  • Reading my blog every day no matter how boring it may be to you.
  • Never getting mad when you read about yourself; because you will be mentioned, if not the subject, of about 90% of posts.
  • Deciding which of 10 almost identical photos is the best.
  • Letting me drag you to the latest hipster cafe/restaurant/bar I read about on a friend's blog.
  • Not getting (too) annoyed when I take too long to stage and caption a photo for instagram.
  • Stepping in as photographer when I need you to.
  • Playing along when I try to make it look like I thought up the "date" we are on when I'm actually just writing a review/received free tickets.

I can list so many more, but most of all, thank you, Jesse, for being nothing but helpful, loving, and supportive throughout it all; I know I'm a pain-in-the-ass.

Three cheers for the blogger boyfriends, husbands, and significant others out there!

Disappointing Beauty Products.

We post our favorite beauty products month after month (see), but as with everything, with the good comes the bad (and the ugly). Because there is a downside to this beauty blogging business, and that is the disappointing products. The ones that you're just dying to try, the ones that are so hyped, so expensive and for whatever reason, just don't work for you. We rarely share that side of the story, but because life isn't all sunshine and roses, I'm going to delve in to full disclosure land and share with you, the products that just didn't live up to my expectations. Some may work for you (I hate you), some may disappoint you too, because at the end of the day, we're all different and not everything works for everyone. It is through trial and error that we discover what does and doesn't work for us.

Too Faced Melted Lipsticks
So much hype back in the day lead me to so much disappointment. I absolutely love the colours (especially Melted Metal Peony) don't get me wrong, but I guess that I expected to get a lot more wear our of my application? Most of my liquid lipsticks are matte, true, so I'm used to them lasting almost all day. Sure, this isn't a matte formula, I still expected more than 30 minutes out of it. I still reach for it on days when I don't need all-day colour, but it's a damn shame I can't wear it to work without using the whole damn tube over the course of a day.

NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation
THIS was the disappointment that killed me. I received a sample sachet in with one of my online orders and I absolutely loved it. Went and bought the full-sized bottle (at $72, no less) and it just did not work for me. WHY?! I mean, I appreciate the fact that it has a pump, the massive range of shades, and the fact that it's quite watery, meaning it spreads and blends nicely. For about 20 minutes, it really does look amazing, but then.. BUT THEN EVERYTHING GOES WRONG! I don't know why, but it just.. dies. And I'm left with a weird/flaky/oily/scaly/blotchy/cake/giraffe spots mixture of contradictions over most of my face, but mostly around my nose and mouth. I've tried using it when my skin's been especially dry, normal and oily. I've tried applying it with a brush, sponge and my fingers. I've tried using it with and without thick moisturizers and primers, with and without powders.. I just don't know but I'm devastated.

Savvy CC Powder
For such a cheap drugstore product, I'm not even mad that this didn't really work. First off, there wasn't much "colour correcting" going on. It did make me teeniest bit paler and I guess "brightened" due to the light hue of the compact, but no tones were corrected as such. Secondly, I feel as though the powder is too course. No matter how I applied it: under concealer, on top of concealer before foundation, on top of foundation, it always left me with a chalky looking complexion and my concealers and foundations ended up sort of sticking to and absorbing the powder, leaving the parts of my face that I applied the powder to looking dried up and caked. Finally, the shimmer, or should I say chunks of glitter, are not subtle at all. Which isn't the kind of thing I'm in to.

Kate Moss Lasting Finish Lipstick
I purchased Kate Moss's Matte Finish lipstick in a beautiful bright red. I loved it so much that I went and bought a much more subtle pinky coral coloured offering (shade 38) from the Lasting Finish range. Again, LOVE the colour, hate the lasting power. I try not to compare non-matte formulas to matte formulas, but I really did expect a longer lasting lip - ESPECIALLY since this is advertised as a "long lasting" lipstick. Narrrt!

Have you ever been disappointed by a hyped beauty product?

Spring Inspiration Board.

We've had the worst Winter that we've had in x amount of years here in Perth this year and let me tell you: I'm glad to see the back of it. I can already feel the magical transition from Winter to Spring. I've begun to notice the warmer mornings, the perfumed air, the sunshine peaking through the clouds, the quiet sounds of life in the trees, no matter how slight. This new month has me feeling more invigorated than I have in months.

Here is my mood board of all things inspiring me this Spring:

Juggling.

Juggling studying and 90 hours of work placement, working full-time, trying to maintain an active lifestyle, building a house, and maintaining happy and healthy relationships is hard work. There just aren't enough hours in a day to do any of it as well as I'd like. Half of the time, it's like my body is on auto-pilot, going through the motions of the day while my mind elsewhere, thinking about our next building appointment and what colour our garage door should be, or when my next assessment is due and just how much study I can cram into my hour lunch break.

Recently, I really felt like I was getting the hang of this juggling thing. I've gained so much motivation and grown so much more passionate about creating beautiful experiences not just for myself, but also for others during my studies, I've been happier and healthier than I have been in a long time and I've been accomplishing everything I need during my 9-5 job.

I had a really good day yesterday. I completed and submitted two (!!) assessments and nailed my interview for a position at Perth Fashion Festival to complete some work placement hours.
Study-wise, it was a huge win of a day.

But then I got home, tired and stressed and Jesse bore the brunt of it all.
Relationship-wise, it wasn't such a win of a day.

But, despite my shitty attitude and my snapping, I still fell asleep to the most amazing, loving and supportive text message after he went home that night and it made all the hard work of that day feel a little better.

It's all about perfecting balance, I guess. Keeping the scale from tipping too much in favour of any one thing at the cost of another. That, I am still working on.

My Month on Instagram - July.

If you've been following Christie's Take on Life for any amount of time, you'd surely know by now that I'm a major lover of Instagram! It's the perfect outlet for posting inspiration and little snippets of life, and seeing what my favourite bloggers and friends are up to.

There are so many times that my Instagram posts never make it to my blog, and that's a damn shame because I consider myself to be quite the photographer..

..Not really, but it's a shame nonetheless!

Instalife over the past month looked something like this:

There's nothing I love more than gorgeous cotton candy clouds. *insert heart eyes emoji here*

IS THIS NOT THE MOST AMAZING MILKSHAKE YOU'VE EVER SEEN?!

You can't go wrong with Rabbit in the Moon, fellow Perthians. Not one bit.

My sisters 21st dress up party was pretty rad. For this look, I used Eye of Horus's liquid eyeliner over my whole damn face.

I love finding pretty new feeds to follow on Instagram; leave your account deets in the comments, or come find me: @christieee__x!

July Look Back and August Goals.

A look back at July's goals:

Spend exactly zero unnecessary dollars
"The reality of attempting to building a house has hit me. Thanks to a particularly
expensive (and painful) trip to the dentist, if I'm to have enough money to live comfortably, I really cannot afford to spend a single dollar on food, clothes, make-up.. anything that isn't considered necessary for a while. This is going to be fun."
Cross: I did really well at the beginning of the month, then utterly terrible at the end. Oops.

Refocus on my studies
"Once again, Christie's studies have fallen behind. Trying to study on top of juggling working full-time, builders, land, and finance applications/admin/please leave me alone for 10 minutes, attempting to have something of a social life and exercising regularly has proven almost impossible lately. This month my priorities are going to be shuffled so I can put a lot of energy in to catching up by at least 1 unit before the workshop I'll be attending at the end of July."
Tick: I completed my unit like the good little schoolgirl I am and am halfway through the next.

Look in to affiliate links
"I'd like to put my blog's big girl pants on and get in to finding some make-up and beauty related affiliate partnerships. If anyone knows any good (and easy, because derrp) Australia-friendly affiliate sites, or had any tips, hit me up and I'll love you for ever."
Tick: I am a big girl blogger now.

Attempt to slow down and be present
"By reading even one paragraph of this post, you'd see that my life is basically one big clusterfuck of stress right now. Life's travelling by pretty fast; I'm thinking of a flooptillion things at once and suddenly, It's the end of the day and I don't remember doing a single thing. It's like my body is on auto-pilot, going through the motions while my mind is racing. I guess I need to try and focus on one thing at a time, or more importantly, take some time to relax. Put away the stress for an hour and have a coffee with a friend, or take a bath. Anything to keep from tipping over the edge."
Cross: I tried. Kind of, but then I felt as though I were wasting time that I could be using to get shit done.. Too much life to deal with right now.

Goals for August:

Book my car in for a service
You know when you're trying really hard to save money, and THAT'S when everything comes up? Welcome to my life for the past few months. I discovered just today that my beloved car is due for its next service. Yay, life.

Fix my rear bumper
Further to my statement above, some wonderful fellow citizen of the world decided to leave my car with a some beautiful decorations permanently indented in to it. AKA some ass drove into my car in a parking lot and bailed. It's bugging the shit out of me - time for a new one.
P.S. I hate all humans.

Complete the Event Concepts unit
I'm part way through this particular unit, and it's a biggie. Though big, it's actually a fun one (!!!), so I definitely want to get this whole unit submitted come September.

Clean the fish tank
I'm a terrible mother and should never be in charge of life. But I am. AND my fish have all (somehow) lived for over a year now, thank you very much. But.. their tank is disgusting. More than disgusting. And I've been putting cleaning it off for months now. Terrible.

July Beauty Favourites.

One: NYX Lip Lingerie Lipstick in "Exotic"
NYX IS FINALLY AVAILABLE IN AUSTRALIAN DRUGSTORES AND I'M SO EXCITED! In saying that, I don't know if my love for this is purely because it's new and exciting or because I genuinely like the product. I definitely do love the colour, though! The warm mahogany red is a perfect shade for the Autumn/Winter months. I've grown accustomed to Jeffree Star's liquid lipsticks, so I'm used to insane staying power BUT I must say, I'm impressed with how long this stayed on. It does take a while to dry (hi, smudges) but when it does, it definitely is matte and definitely does stay there for a nice amount of time. SPEAKING OF! It doesn't dry out my lips! Which is always a concern of mine when it comes to anything matte. Not too bad for a drugstore buy.

Two: Furless Cosmetics Eyeshadow Loose Pigments in "Unadulterated"
Oof! Furless have always been on my radar for their vegan and cruelty free ways, and I finally got to see what they're made of when I got my hands on this pot of gold (see what I did there?!). There are about 16843615 different shades, but I ultimately ended up with this lurrrvvveeeely golden colour. It's perfect to stamp in the middle of the lid over a cream primer when I'm going for a dark, smoky black look (the only look I ever go for, let's be real). Can we talk about the pot itself for a sec? It reminds me of a friggin' trophy. I'm huge on aesthetics and for a single shadow pot (which are usually plain and cheap, let's be honest), the packaging looks so luxe and I can't even. For someone who is incredibly unco/messy/why do I bother when it comes to loose anything, I really do enjoy using this pigment. The pigmentation is crazy, it glides on smoothly, and has such a gorgeous shimmer that doesn't fall off or fade away once applied like sososo many other pigments do. I've also used it on my lips and that was pretty rad too. P.S. Furless also have a range of brushes which I'm dying to treat myself to next!

Three: Eye of Horus Liquid Eyeliner in "Black"
GUYS! I FINALLY APPLIED A SUCCESSFUL CAT EYE AND NOW I'M READY TO RULE THE WORLD! Fun story: I dressed up as a cat (SEE!) last week for my sister's 21st and this was the only thing I used to draw all over my face. It lasted all night. The. Whole. Damn. Vodka. Filled. Night. I was introduced to Eye of Horus back in my Bellabox days. After falling in love with their kohl pencil, I tried my luck with the liquid offering and boy! It's blacker than my soul, glides on smooth and sharp and dries quickly without flaking away. I find "pen" liquid liners to be much easier to use and maneuver evenly over the lid than pots so this is perfect for me. The range has a few metallic shades for lots of nifty little looks but black will always be my jam.

Four: NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer in "Chantilly"
After years of using Maybelline's FitMe, the well-known dupe for this bad boy read; being stingy, I finally convinced myself to give it a try. I've been missing out! FitMe is great, for sure, but this! This is something else! I think it's the shade that really did it for me - such a true ivory which is perfect for not only concealing, but for highlighting and brightening too. It's super creamy (duh), glides on and blends wonderfully, does not crease and stays put all the while covering my hideous under eye bags. It's an expensive little bugger so it only comes out on special occasions, but I'm sososo glad I've now got in in my arsenal.

Five: ASAP Skincare (on sale right now!) Gentle Cleansing Gel
As always, my skin is making my life difficult. Water dries me out, moisturizer oils me up. It's a vicious cycle, especially in Winter. Finding a cleanser that's gentle, doesn't leave my face tight and dry, and actually rids my face of the day is more than a challenge, but I'm loving ASAP's gel cleanser right now. IT ACTUALLY WORKS FOR ME! It doesn't irritate my usually sensitive skin, likely due to the aloe vera goodness, but still manages to effectively break through the day's makeup and face gunk, leaving my skin feeling fresh, soft and more supple than any cleanser I've tired. Plus, the smell is so refreshing - like lemon meringue - yaaasss.
